My First (and Only) Job
A middle-aged man’s introspection into his career.
Careers are no longer defined by your tenure at a job, the stature of your title and seemingly cash is no longer king.
Most often people seem more interested in knowing the work is;
Remote ✔️
Flexible Hours ✔️
Limited Oversight ✔️
As a recent college drop-out in 2002, I began working for a Hotelier that had recently opened a boutique property in Midtown New York City.
The Hotel had launched with a restaurant concept created by Britney Spears — it was as bad as it sounds.
My job was to replace it with a new restaurant. Simple, not so much.
Fast forward 6-months, I had met and become ‘friendly’ with Cipriani, Nobu, Jean-Georges, amongst many of the most celebrated restaurateurs, Chefs and culinary figures the country had to offer.
The reward for connecting with these folks, generating proposals and working tirelessly was a few hundred dollars a week.
Your first job often won’t help you create any great level of wealth, but it certainly will set the stage for your career. Choose wisely.
I left after 9-months and started my first business.
More to come.
